Rule in the ordinary possibilities
Toilets, appliances, tanks and nearby shared systems can make pipe noise. A sound may be more noticeable at night because the surroundings are quieter. Explain when and where it occurs and whether it changes during known water use.
The loudest point may not be the source
Sound can travel along a supply pipe or through the structure. Specialist listening compares useful points and considers pipe material, pressure and background noise. A strong signal is evaluated alongside other evidence, not used as permission to open a wall immediately.
A quiet pipe can still leak
Some materials and conditions produce weak signals. If other evidence suggests water loss, an engineer may select another method. Do not repeatedly operate unfamiliar valves in an attempt to silence the noise; describe the normal pattern instead.
Keep these points in mind
- Record the timing and strongest listening position
- Mention shared or automatic water systems
- Share any change in bills or meter readings
This guide provides general preparation information. The right investigation depends on the property, its systems and the evidence available. For active flooding, electrical danger or an unsafe ceiling, seek urgent appropriate help rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
