Understanding water meter checks

What a moving reading can tell you, and what it cannot.

Account for ordinary and automatic use

A meter records water passing through it, which may include toilets, tanks, appliances and outdoor systems even when taps are closed. Shared arrangements add another complication. Before concluding that water is escaping underground, establish which uses are included in the measurement.

Keep readings comparable

Use actual dated readings where the meter is safely accessible and note the conditions at the time. A long unexplained increase is a different observation from brief movement during an appliance cycle. If the meter is inaccessible or belongs to a shared arrangement, ask the supplier about a suitable check.

Use professional isolation appropriately

An engineer may use suitable isolation to help distinguish incoming and internal pipe sections. The result depends on the installation and valve performance. Do not interfere with supplier equipment or assume every stop valve controls only your property.

Keep these points in mind

  • Record readings and times
  • Mention tanks and automatic water users
  • Share any supplier investigation results

This guide provides general preparation information. The right investigation depends on the property, its systems and the evidence available. For active flooding, electrical danger or an unsafe ceiling, seek urgent appropriate help rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
