Trace means investigate the source
Tracing connects the signs of water loss with the likely pipe or fitting. An engineer may use several methods because no single result tells the whole story in every building. The aim is a supported explanation for where further access is needed.
Access means reach the affected plumbing
A concealed pipe usually cannot be repaired through its finished covering. Access may involve opening a wall or floor, or excavating around a private supply. That opening is different from restoring the surface after the repair. Knowing this distinction helps you discuss the scope with both a contractor and your insurer.
A report records; the insurer decides cover
The We Find Leaks package includes a Trace & Access report for the agreed work. Ask your insurer about prior approval, required evidence and which parts of the work your policy covers. A report supports a conversation about the facts; it is not a guarantee of reimbursement or an assessment of your policy entitlement.
Keep these points in mind
- Ask about approval before instructing work
- Keep photos and earlier reports
- Separate investigation, pipe repair and reinstatement costs
This guide provides general preparation information. The right investigation depends on the property, its systems and the evidence available. For active flooding, electrical danger or an unsafe ceiling, seek urgent appropriate help rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
