Explain what you know
Describe the signs, when they began and any action already taken. State clearly whether the cause is confirmed or still being investigated. Photos and a short timeline help avoid confusing the visible damage with the source. Follow the insurer’s instructions for urgent steps and keep records.
Ask about the separate stages
Ask what your policy says about tracing, accessing the pipe, repairing the plumbing and reinstating the building. Also ask about drying and any excess or limits that apply. These are questions for your insurer; the name of a contractor’s package does not determine what your policy will pay.
Confirm the evidence and approval route
Find out whether work needs approval first, whether the insurer has a required contractor process and what the report must contain. Keep a note of the answer, date and claim reference. Share relevant reporting requirements before the visit so the instruction is understood.
Keep these points in mind
- Is prior approval required?
- Which stages are covered under my policy?
- What records and photographs should I retain?
This guide provides general preparation information. The right investigation depends on the property, its systems and the evidence available. For active flooding, electrical danger or an unsafe ceiling, seek urgent appropriate help rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
