Keep away from danger
Do not touch wet electrical equipment or enter standing water where electricity may be involved. Keep people away from bulging ceilings or unstable material. Seek urgent help from the relevant emergency professional; call emergency services if there is an immediate threat to life.
Limit the water only when safe
If you know the internal stop valve and can reach it safely, isolating the water may help limit escape. Do not force a seized valve or operate unfamiliar equipment. WaterSafe provides guidance on responding to a burst pipe and finding appropriate plumbing help.
Keep a record when it is safe to do so
Photographs and a timeline can help explain the incident afterwards. Contact the landlord, manager, insurer or water supplier as appropriate. Do not delay immediate safety action while trying to complete an online form.
